Our Approach to Review
All of our Japanese will be in the form of Kanji with furigana. We choose to do so just because that’s how GENKI does it. Even though GENKI doesn’t use Kanji early on, we choose to include it from the beginning anyways since it will be important for students to recognize the Kanji in the future.
We test recognition for Kana (Hiragana and Katakana). Unfortunately, there isn't a great way to practice recall without actually writing the characters out. We recommend for you to do that separately.
We test both recall and recognition for vocabulary. We think both recall and recognition are important, and we keep track of your progress on each card separately. For vocabulary, we allow for multiple answer options to the same question, just because we know there are synonyms. We ignore all punctuation and spacing in your answer.
We support Romaji input for a few reasons two reasons: we know a lot of early learners of Genki will be relying on it and we know you're on a computer, so whether or not you're using Japanese input or English input, you're effectively using Romaji. We generally accept the Revised Hepburn of inputting Romaji. For long vowels, in the case of おう for example, we accept both 'ou' and 'oo'. We don't want to get into the debate what is more proper.
Three attempts: When you review flash cards, we’ll give you 3 attempts. After the first attempt, we’ll give you a clue. We know that we’re all prone to typos and the synonyms can sometimes make you response incorrectly. We don’t want to penalize you and move a Level 7 card all the way down to Level 1 just because of a typo.
